Hypnotherapy

Its History

The word Hypnotherapy is derived by James Braid (1843) from the Greek word ‘Hypnos’ which means sleep. Whilst there are many contributors to the development of Hypnotherapy, Braid has been regarded as the ‘Father of Hypnosis’

Prior to Braid, hypnotherapy was called the power of suggestion or mesmeric sleep. So the word hypnotherapy is relatively a new word.

It’s was used by many surgeons during operations and amputations however, it lost favour once chemical anaesthetics became more widely used in the late 19th Century.

Nowadays hypnotherapy is becoming as popular as ever and Milton H Erickson M.D (1901 – 1980) is considered to be one of the most influential modern hypnotherapists of our time.

The popularity of Erickson's techniques has since led to the development of Neuro-Linguistic programming (NLP), which has in turn found use in modern-day sales, advertising, and corporate training. You can find much information about this either on the Internet or public Library and the works of Richard Bandler and John Grinder (The founders of NLP) also. Please also see my seperate link on NLP.

So you could call Hypnotherapy the power of suggestion or trance? What is Trance? Some may say it does not exist but others may say it is the natural state where the conscious mind is bypassed to allow direct access to the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is considered to be limitless and the real driver of the individual.

What can I expect when visiting you for some hypnotherapy?

We would obviously discuss your needs and what you are looking to accomplish. You will be made comfortable and relaxed. Once in trance you will be fully aware of what is going on and will remember everything about what we have discussed after. Normally a session will last for and hour but obviously we can adjust this to cater for your needs.
